Maroon 5 - Call & Response: The Remix Album

Maroon 5 are to release an album of their songs remixed by an array of major urban music stars.

Next month, the Los Angeles band’s Call & Response: The Remix Album will see rap and r’n'b stars , including Pharell Williams and Mary J Blige, tackle tracks pulled mainly from their records Songs About Jane and It Won’t Be Soon Before Long.

Frontman Adam Levine told AllHipHop: “I’ve always found it really interesting that a group of people looking at the same painting can all see different things.”

He added: “That was the idea behind this record, to take a few of our songs and have them interpreted by some of our favourite artists. We were really blown away by what they came up with.”

Aside from Pharrell and Mary J, artists including ?uestlove from The Roots and up and coming act The Cool Kids are on remix duty on the record.

Call & Response: The Remix Album is out 8 December.

Sasha gets involved again

Superstar DJ Sasha will return to Global Underground in September for the second edition of his Involver mix series.

Dubbed Invol2ver, the CD features twelve heavily worked over tracks that have been blended together by the celebrated DJ. Featured are Radiohead's Thom Yorke, synth pop stars Ladytron, indie troubadour Ray La Montagne and Telefon Tel Aviv. Limited edition copies will include a second CD of Sasha remix exclusives.

Like the original Involver, the heavily edited tracks have been reworked by Sasha himself, allowing the producer to build the mix much like a novel, complete with foreshadowing, rising action, climax and denouement. With the varied likes of M83, Rone and Home Video also on board, we expect it to be a highly melodic journey that throws an anthemic bomb in the face of the reigning minimal techno sound.

In support of the release, Sasha will play a special extended set at Ministry of Sound on August 30th. Full information and tickets on RA below.

Eddie Haliwell presents Fire It Up compilation

Eddie Halliwell is the closest version to a new ‘superstar’ DJ we have in the UK since the halcyon days of Oakey laying down the law on the terrace of Cream or since Sasha was hailed Son Of God by a leading dance music publication. This is the long awaited debut compilation from Eddie under his own Fire It Up banner.

Eddie started DJing at the age of 15 and after a few years honing his ability landed residencies at two of the biggest club nights in the UK; Goodgreef and Gatecrasher. Touring extensively around the world, Halliwell became famed for his sets at the legendary Cream Amnesia and Judgement Sundays in Ibiza. Now also running his own exciting and forward thinking events under the Fire It Up banner which has now become a successful clubbing brand in its own right.

With biggies from Sander van Doorn, Ernesto vs Bastian and Trance’s new kid Greg Downey, nearly all of the tracks featured have had their very own special ‘Ed-it’ from Halliwell, making this mix 100% individual and innovative, key principles that the golden boy also applies to his DJ sets.

Eddie started his Fire It Up World Tour at Goodgreef in Preston on April 12th, moving onto Canada and USA before he moves on to take over the rest of the world. Cue evil genius style mwooo haaa haaa laugh! Other UK dates will include Escape Into The Park in Swansea on 14th June.

Hybrid mix Soundsystem 01

Widescreen breaks duo Hybrid mix up ambient electronica and film scores on a new mix compilation Soundsystem 01 due out in July.

Hybrid's debut album Wide Angle (1999), which combined breaks and filmscore-like symphonies, earmarked the duo of Mike Truman and Chris Healings as doyens of so-called "cinematic breaks." Now the pair take the filmic tag one step further on a new 2CD compilation. Disc one includes atmospheric electronica from Trentemoller, Spooky and Vector Lovers alongside actual film score selections from big screen hits Babel, Crash and 28 Days Later. On the second disc, the pair wear their more traditional progressive/breaks hat mixing up selections from Sasha, Quivver and Elite Force with their own new material.

Onur Özer mixes Watergate 01

Berlin club Watergate follows in the footsteps of Fabric and Berghain by starting a mix series.

Now five years old, Watergate is known for its famous club-length LED lighting, its riverside location and its dedication to the minimal end of house and techno. Now comes a label, and a new mix series from the club, with the first volume being mixed by Istanbul DJ and producer Onur Özer, a regular at Watergate Dumb-Unit/Vakant parties.

Like Fabric and Berghain, the mix series promises close attention to packaging and design as well as the music, which on Watergate 01 focuses on up-to-the-minute house and techno from the likes of Patrice Bäumel, Johnny D, Dinky as well as Özer himself.

New York takes to the seas

2008: the summer that New York took to the seas in the name of dance music?

It seems that way. Global Frequencies will be hosting the city’s first-ever extended boat party series between May 24th and September 21st. Only the first two DJs have been announced at the moment, but local DJs John Creamer & Stephane K are booked for the 24th and James Talk and Luke Fair on June 15th. Mmm, we can smell that fresh, beautiful and toxin-rich East River now...

But if fun on the water isn’t reason enough, Mansion’s sound engineer Mark Divine will be in charge of the system. He promises “a four point full range,” which we’re guessing is a good thing.

Weatherall mixes Watch The Ride

Latest volume in the anything goes mix series Watch The Ride comes from rock-n-roll DJ Andrew Weatherall, due out next month.

Weatherall's ...Ride mix follows breaks, house and three straight drum'n'bass volumes, but those expecting an out-and-out electronic mix from the Lone Swordsman will have to wait for his next CD (or even the one after that). Weatherall's ...Ride mixes up rock (Roy Montgomery, The Black Lips), nu-disco (Cosmo Vitelli, Mock & Toof), indie-pop (Au Revoir Simone), goth (Siouxsie Soux) with a dash of electronics (Fairmont, Alloy Mental).

An overview of Lessizmore

New cuts from Jay Haze, Mathias Kaden and Digitaline star on Lessizmore Overview, a label compilation from French-Belgian club night Lessizmore due out in March.

Lessizmore, has been putting on label nights at top clubs such as Fuse in Brussels and the Rex Club in Paris for over two years with invites extended to the rosters of M_nus, Hello Repeat?, Vakant, Alphahouse, Mobilee and Circus Company. After all those talented producers passing through, last year the party also set up a label, run by Fuse resident DJ Pierre.

Lessizmore Overview is the label's first compilation. Disc one of the 2CD set is a mix by Pierre of new material from the likes of Someone Else, Chaton, Sarah Goldfarb while the second disc includes fourteen unreleased cuts from Junction SM, Pikaya and Digitaline and more. Additional tracks by Butane and Pheek will also be released on two vinyl EPs.
