MTV Awards announced for 2008

Created On March 18th, 2008 by i_have_ADD

The first details of MTV’s annual localised awards night have been revealed for 2008, although not without the requisite format updates. The awards initially launched down under back in 2005 at the Luna Park Big Top, hosted by the Osbourne family and featuring Anna-Nicole Smith’s infamous (and, err, totally spontaneous) boob-flash.

Since shifting to the Superdome/Acer Arena two years back, the awards have continued to grow in size. It seems that’s all about to change this year, though, with the ceremony being moved to Australian Technology Park in the inner-city Sydney suburb of Redfern. The venue, which is significantly smaller in capacity than Acer Arena, is used for the filming of TV shows like Australia’s Next Top Model and So You Think You Can Dance.

So far Hollywood-starlet-gone-rock-chick Juliette Lewis and her band The Licks have been announced to perform, as well as hip-hop/urban mega-stars Eve and 50 Cent. It’s also rumoured that the Foo Fights will make a cameo, with the band in the country on tour at the time of the event. Other celebs doing the rounds as possibilities to feature include Lindsay Lohan, Mischa Barton and Paris Hilton.

Benny Benassi steals Carl Craig's Grammy

The Chemical Brothers, Justin Timberlake and Benassi sweep the dance music awards.

Before the long and (mostly) boring telecast on Sunday night, Grammys were presented for the best electronic music of 2007. According to the Recording Academy, at least, Justin Timberlake’s ‘Lovestoned/I Think She Knows’ was the Best Dance Recording of 2008, beating out Mika’s ‘Love Today’ and Justice’s ‘D.A.N.C.E.’ Meanwhile, UK big-beaters The Chemical Brothers recorded the finest dance album of the year with We Are the Night, beating out Tiësto's Elements of Life, Justice's and LCD Soundsystem's Sound of Silver

Carl Craig, who turned down a gig at Berlin’s famed Berghain to attend the ceremony, was nominated for his remix of the Junior Boys 'Like a Child', but was fated to remain in his seat all night, losing out to electroclash survivor Benny Benassi's take on Public Enemy’s ‘Bring the Noise’. Here is Mr. Benassi's triumphant entry:

Benny Benassi pips Dirty South at Grammys

Created On February 11th, 2008 by JackT

‘Our’ world-conquering producer Dirty South confirmed his hot property status with a Best Remix nomination in the 2008 Grammys. We’ve just heard the award was taken by Benny Benassi for his take on Public Enemy’s Bring The Noise. The competition was tight, with the likes of Carl Craig, Eric Prydz and Andy Moor also up for the honour. Hearty congratulations to Dirty South for finding himself in such prestigious company.

Elsewhere in the award ceremony, Future Music Festival headliners The Chemical Brothers claimed Best Electronic/Dance Album for We Are The Night, while Justin Timberlake’s LoveStoned/I Think That She Knows snatched Best Dance Recording.

The big winner of the night was Amy Winehouse, with nods for Pop Vocal Album, Female Pop Vocal Performance and – weirdly given her two-album status – Best New Artist. Having been denied a visa to enter the USA, the singer got to watch the ceremony from the less boozy environs of rehab.

After delivering a knockout show at Melbourne’s Good Vibrations festival, Kanye West bypassed Brisbane to be back in America for the ceremony. He took the stage at LA’s Staples Centre for a jet lag-defying run-through of Hey Mama and Stronger, the latter of which won Best Rap Solo Performance.

Here’s an abridged list of the winners from the 50th Grammy Awards. Sorry to anyone waiting to hear the winner of Spoken Word Album for Children or Country Instrumental Performance …

Breakspoll opens for voting

Breakspoll will once again dish out trophies to the best and brightest producers and DJs of the past year at the 7th Annual Breakbeat Awards at Fabric on Thursday, February 28.

This year’s Breakspoll ballot includes a new Best Live Act category so many DJs will be eschewing their turntables for a backing band and synth rig at the ceremony. Elder statesmen like Rennie Pilgrem and the Dub Pistols are set to rock room one, while fresh upstarts Deekline & Wizard and Slyde will take on room two. Behind the decks you’ll also catch the likes of Krafty Kuts, Meat Katie & Lee Coombs and Baobinga & ID.

But Breakspoll wouldn’t be Breakspoll without a vote, which is open to the masses until February 15. Nominees in each category will be announced a week later. Last year’s winners include Krafty Kuts (Best DJ), who’ll be crossing his fingers for a fourth straight win; Mantra Breaks (Best Label), which upset Finger Lickin’ Records after four years on top; and Far Too Loud (Best Single) for their techy peaktimer ‘Get High.’ You can take a peep at this year’s lineup and past winners plus cast your vote at Breakspoll.com.

After the lights go up at Fabric on Friday morning, you’ll only have to wait out one miserable afternoon before another night of bassbin-bashing breaks, as the Breakspoll Aftershow Party will take on club Herbal in Shoreditch. DJs on this night include Freestylers, Tom Real & The Rogue Element, Splitloop and Si Begg.
