Trentemoller pulls out of Field Day

Danish producer Trentemøller has pulled out of Australia's Field Day festival, which is still due to go ahead on New Year's Day.

This is yet another setback for the festival, who only a few weeks back were dealt the blow that Roger Sanchez had cancelled. Trentemøller was extremely vague when giving his reasons for cancelling, stating that “serious personal issues” were the factor that led him to that decision. Personal issues concerning what, we're not sure. RA will keep you updated if anything further is announced regarding this.

It isn't all doom and gloom for Field Day, however, as they've got a raft of new acts that have been added to the bill. Pop-princess Ladyhawke joins JD Samson of Le Tigre and German tech-house DJ Oliver Huntemann on the line-up, whilst The Bag Raiders will also play live.

Juan Maclean launches new live project

Juan Maclean will be performing a special audio/visual live show at Berlin's Scala on Thursday 20th November.

His 'Love Acid' project is a collaboration with Alison Childs, who is the resident video artist for the Berlin's Donuts night. Dubbed as a "psychedelic visual live acid disco house party", Juan will provide a set of live analogue audio which will be supplemented by Childs' video projections. Fellow DFA artist Gavin Russom will also be performing live under his Black Meteoric Star guise, lugging his bank of machines over to Scala to provide a set of dark and psychedelic acid. As if that wasn't enough, both Plastique De Rêve and Juan Maclean will DJ at what's sure to be one of the hottest parties happening in Berlin this week.

Groove Magazine celebrate 19th birthday

Groove turn 19 this December, and to celebrate they're throwing four parties in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Frankfurt.

Being Groove, they haven’t pulled any punches as far as assembling their line-ups, attracting some of the biggest names around in the underground electronic music scene. Berlin's Watergate venue is where the celebrations begin, and they've got an all-star line-up of Ricardo Villalobos, Michael Mayer and Apparat. (Warp's latest African signing Mujava also plays his debut Berlin show there.)

Groove take the party to Hamburg's NeibKlub the night after, where guests include Carl Craig, Radio Slave, Shed and Stefan Goldmann. Just as you think that things can't really get more impressive, they're keeping their stamina up and travelling to Munich, where they've lured Isolee into playing live, supported by Âme, Christian Prommer and Radio Slave yet again. Three events in three days—surely that's enough for the Groove guys?

Seemingly not, as the following weekend sees them take over two adjoining Frankfurt clubs in the same night, opening both up to create a massive three-room party. The legendary Robert-Johnson club will host a live set from the Arto Mwambé project, as well as DJ sets from Dixon and Ewan Pearson. It's next door neighbour is MTW, which will see turns on the decks from Luke Slater, Marcel Dettmann, Federico Molinari whilst Johnny D and Modeselektor will also play live.

With parties as enticing as this being thrown for their 19th birthday, who knows what they're going to do next year for their 20th?

BPM Festival announces initial line-up

January's BPM Festival has announced the initial names on its line-up, including current RA podcaster Lee Burridge and Damian Lazarus.

BPM takes place in the Playa del Carmen region, which is located on the Caribbean coast of Mexico. Of course, they'll be making the most of the tropical location, hosting daytime beach parties for each of the ten days before moving the music into the clubs with a load of top DJs. The full bill is yet to be revealed, but they have currently announced that Lee Burridge, Sander Kleinenberg, Damian Lazarus, Steve Lawler and M.A.N.D.Y. will all be making appearances.

The festival runs from January 2nd-11th, so if you need to wash those New Year's blues away with some sun, sand, sea and beats, there are worse places to be than BPM.

Snowbombing announce initial line-up

Austria's Snowbombing festival is now one of the biggest events in the festival calendar, and it has just released its line-up for 2009's bash.

As with previous years, the line-up has an incredibly wide range of acts for your delectation. Whether you're into house, techno, disco, dubstep or drum & bass, there'll be plenty for you to check out over the course of the week long event. The organisers have got their cheque book out and managed to secure Fatboy Slim for a rare headline set, while elsewhere you can hear DJ sets from Grandmaster Flash, James Zabiela, Claude VonStroke, Nic Fanciulli, Greg Wilson, Reverso 68, Lindstrøm, Chase & Status, High Contrast, Skream, Benga and many others. For those sick of seeing DJs, the live line-up is bigger than ever this time around, with artists booked including Dizzee Rascal, Beardyman and The Whip.

There's so much going on during the week that it doesn't seem like there'll be much time for anyone to go skiing. Just make sure that you don't inadvertently go whizzing down a slope after a few too many!

Judge Jules and Gilles Peterson don their pirate duds

Judge Jules and Gilles Peterson are set to ride the seven seas this weekend as part of the Chuff Chuff party.

The duo, and a host of other DJs, will be manning the decks for the epic 16-hour shindig set to go off in the Midlands at Alton Towers. And, as if the name didn't tip you off, there's going to be a bit of a theme to all of this. As a result, you should expect to see Judge and Gilles breaking out their best pirate costumes and, if you want to fit in, you'll most likely have to have your own as well.

That'll be easier than you think, though, as Alton Towers offers a nice little hotel accommodation package, including spa suites and water park availability for those not in the clubbing mood. Act fast, though, and be ready to call in sick for Monday. Our excuse? Scurvy, of course.

Warp set to release On The Hour

Warp are set to release both series of Chris Morris' early 90s radio show, On The Hour, on November 24th.

The show, originally broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in the early '90s, was a satire on the way that the news is presented to us through the modern media. As well as being the first appearance of Steve Coogan's now famous Alan Partridge character, the show was later adapted into a TV news format for Morris' The Day Today show.

Previously the only commercial release of the show was a double cassette that contained just two of the six hours of broadcasted material. This was due to a legal dispute with co-writers Stewart Lee and Richard Herring, as all of the parts that they'd had a hand in writing were chopped out of that release. It seems like this has all been resolved now, as Warp are set to release the entire two series as two 4xCD boxsets. Those who can't wait for Morris' forthcoming satire on Jihadi Muslims (one that Morris has even learned Arabic to try and tackle) would be well advised to check this comprehensive collection out.

Richie Hawtin headlines The End

M_nus boss Richie Hawtin is set to headline The End on Saturday 27th December.

Unless he gets booked to play again before the West London club closes its doors for good on 24th of January (which is not impossible, but unlikely), this will be the last time that you'll have the chance to see Hawtin at The End. M_nus will be taking over the main room with Richie taking the headlining slot, with a supporting cast yet to be announced. After the disastrous sound problems that plagued the main room of the Contakt event at SEOne, fans will be thankful that M_nus' next visit to the capital will take full advantage of The End's more than adequate soundsystem.

The night won't be all bleepy minimal techno, however, as Layo and Mr C will be playing all night in the AKA Bar. With the club closing less than a month after this event, you can be sure that the two co-owners will be making the most of their time left in the venue.

Circuit party all night long

London club night Circuit have announced a new afterparty for clubbers that haven't partied enough come 4am, starting off this coming Sunday morning.

Their new venture, entitled Circuit AM, will take place straight after their regular night at Home, starting this weekend. Situated just around the corner from Home, the venue for Circuit AM will be the cosy Platinum club, which will open until 11am each Sunday. Mulletover's Geddes will be the first to make the most of the night's extended hours, with appearances later this month from Secret Sundaze resident Giles Smith, Luna City Express and Afrilounge.

And there's nothing more annoying than buying your monthly fix of vinyl, only to have something you really wanted hit the stores the day after you've put through your order. That's why we at RA have decided to give you a list of upcoming albums and singles so you can keep on top of everything that's being put out on a month-to-month basis.

Of course, while we've tried our best to keep all the information as accurate as possible, delays may mean that the release dates aren't 100% correct so keep that in mind when browsing. The Final Stink at T Bar Monday 8th December

As T Bar prepares to shut its doors for the last time we can announce the final reincarnation of Stink, the infamous Monday night session that brought the elite players of underground club music under one roof in East London.

Stink was born during an infamous after-hours involving two of techno leading figures, Damian Lazarus and Michael Mayer (label heads of Crosstown Rebels and Kompakt) and a poolside of guests that were subjected to their musical treats.

The monthly Monday parties brought together an ensemble of the label’s friends and family, welcomed global talents and new faces. A series of all-day bank holiday events witnessed queues from mid-afternoon, dress-up shenanigans and a room full of lost clubbers in the maze at our ‘Get Lost’ party.

MXP4Cafe is New Virutal Meeting Place for Interactive Digital Musicians

Musinaut, the Paris-based company behind the revolutionary new digital audio format MXP4, today unveils its new artist community, MXP4Café.

MXP4Café www.mxp4.com/community will act as a virtual meeting place where forward thinking artists can drop and share interactive MXP4 music files with fellow musicians. Pet Shop Boys set for Brits honour

Pet Shop Boys have been confirmed as the winners of the Outstanding Contribution Award at the 2009 Brit Awards.

Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe formed the group in 1981, and have since had 22 Top 10 hits and four No.1 singles.

A statement from Ged Doherty, Chairman of the Brits committee said: “Since their first Brit Awards over 20 years ago, Neil and Chris have produced a fantastic body of work with songs that truly were the soundtrack to a whole generation’s lives.

“The Pet Shop Boys have since become one of the most influential groups of the modern era and are deserving recipients of the award.”

Previous winners of the prize include Oasis, Tom Jones, Paul Weller and Sir Paul McCartney.

Earlier this month, it was rumoured that Simon Cowell would be this year’s recipient of the prize.

The 2009 Brit Awards will take place at London’s Earls Court on 18 February.

Dizzee Rascal joins forces with Armand Van Helden

Dizzee Rascal has revealed he is working on new material with US DJ Armand Van Helden.

The intriguing collaborative effort has so far spawned a track called ‘Bonkers’ and Dizzee says he is keen to continue working with the house expert, famed for his 1999 No.1 single ‘U Don’t Know Me’.

Bow rapper Dizzee, real name Dylan Mills, told The Daily Star: “I’m working on new material with Armand Van Helden.

“I’m excited by everything that’s about to happen and ready to get back in the studio.”

Dizzee also explained that, amid the credit crunch, he feels his job as an entertainer is even more pertinent – leading him to write increasingly upbeat lyrics.

He added: “Even though it’s a bit of a f***ed up climate right now, I feel it’s my duty to make people be able to enjoy themselves through it.

“Sometimes, when it’s totally s***, people will have more fun becuase they’re grateful for the little enjoyment they can get.”

Maroon 5 - Call & Response: The Remix Album

Maroon 5 are to release an album of their songs remixed by an array of major urban music stars.

Next month, the Los Angeles band’s Call & Response: The Remix Album will see rap and r’n'b stars , including Pharell Williams and Mary J Blige, tackle tracks pulled mainly from their records Songs About Jane and It Won’t Be Soon Before Long.

Frontman Adam Levine told AllHipHop: “I’ve always found it really interesting that a group of people looking at the same painting can all see different things.”

He added: “That was the idea behind this record, to take a few of our songs and have them interpreted by some of our favourite artists. We were really blown away by what they came up with.”

Aside from Pharrell and Mary J, artists including ?uestlove from The Roots and up and coming act The Cool Kids are on remix duty on the record.

M83 reissues albums on vinyl

Synthesizer sultan M83 is set to re-release his first five albums on vinyl.

Anthony Gonzalez, the man behind the project in the studio, has been famously remixed by plenty of electronic music luminaries, including Superpitcher, Boom Bip, Jackson and Yuksek and was including on Luciano's recent Fabric 41 mix. But despite these dance music run-ins, the vinyl market for his work has remained low apparently.

Or that's the thinking by Mute, we guess, based on their decision to re-release Gonzalez's work on vinyl. Whatever the reason, each full-length will be a 2x12 (aside from Digital Shades Vol. 1 which will appear for the first time on the format) and include a bonus CD. Dixon and Âme American tour: The openers

As Dixon and Âme's Kristian Beyer gear up to hit American shores later this week for RA's debut American tour, we decided to catch up with the openers at each stop to see what they might have planned for the night.

New York: As you might expect from a man that has performed often with François K, Brendon Moeller is a veteran of the warm-up set. When we talked with Moeller earlier this week over the phone, Moeller told us as much, saying that he was excited to be opening up for the duo and that he'd be playing some tracks from his upcoming EP on Apnea, as well as from his April 2009 full-length, Jazz Junk Safari, on Third Ear Recordings. If you can't wait that long, though, you can always grab Moeller's most recent offering under his Beat Pharmacy alias, Wikkid Times, which was released today on Wave.

Los Angeles: While New York will only see man take to the warm-up spot, Los Angeles boasts four for the coveted job. Lee Foss is set to play the Avalon's Honey Lounge from 10 PM until midnight when the previously announced trio that makes up Droog—Andrei Osyka, Brett Griffin and Justin Sloe—will take to the decks to further warm up the crowd in advance of the main event. Foss is a late addition to the line-up, and so is Acid Circus, but we're guessing that few people will be sad to hear that the Brothers Vargas will be closing the night out once Dixon and Beyer take their final bow.

San Francisco: From Los Angeles, the boys will be making their way up the coast of California to San Francisco for an epic day party with everyone's favorite techno party souvenir conceptualists, the Cheap Sunglasses crew—AKA Crazy Larry and Taimur. We caught up with the latter earlier this week to give us the lowdown on what the duo might have in store after the cheap sunglasses, temporary tattoos, excuses to call off at work and earbuds. Taimur told us that cheap sunglasses would once again be the order of the day, but this time with a slight change to mark the event. Limited edition sunglasses? Sounds like techno to us.

secretsundaze goes inside for the winter

secretsundaze has announced a winter series of dates to be held in the capital.

The secretsundaze crew won't be hibernating this winter. Instead, Giles Smith and James Priestley have planned a limited schedule of events called secretsundaze & friends, which will bring even more deep house to London.

The duo's impeccable selection means that the series of dates will kick off this weekend with Argy, Glimpse and Drumpoet Community regulars Quarion and Lexx holding things down (with a Disco Bloodbath promised in the third room), while December's event will feature Shinedoe, 2000 and One, and Kabale und Liebe , along with Brothers' Vibe. As Smith tells it, the winter parties will differ from the usual shindigs in size, so they'll be able to "invite more guests and dig a little deeper, getting whole crews to come in."

The question on the minds of those who can't make it to London, though, is plans regarding getting in another DJ to celebrate the opening of yet another ss summer season with a mix, ala Tobi Neumann earlier this year. Priestley isn't quite sure yet: "Perhaps is probably the best answer I can give you right now. The compilation market is tougher than ever at the moment and as much as we love doing the compilation side of things, we need to make sure that it makes sense financially for us too." Which is a clarion call to come support the party in person if we ever heard one.

Compost get fresh

Compost are due to release a new label compilation, Freshly Composted Vol. 3, in January of next year.

The Munich based label is celebrating the fact that they have now had 300 catalogue numbers with a new label compilation, due for release early next year. Freshly Composted Vol. 3 rounds up some of the highlights of the last two years, most of which haven't seen the light of day on CD until now. These include I:Cube's sunkissed remix of Karma, Ripperton's mix of Beanfield and Charles Webster's contribution to Robert Owens' solo album. Fans who own these already need not despair, as Compost have included three previously unreleased tracks from Alif Tree, Part Time Heroes and Shahrokh Sound Of K (again featuring Robert Owens on vocal duties).

Robert Babicz announces more dates

Robert Babicz has added more dates to his forthcoming tour, taking in more of Australia as well as making a stop in New Zealand.

The legendary Cologne producer will now play dates in Brisbane and Victoria at the tail end of November, whilst also adding Perth and Wellington to his December dates. Babicz has produced under various guises (most notably Rob Acid) since the early '90s on labels such as Kompakt and Treibstoff, and will play a full live set at each of the dates. Expect a collision of acid house, techno and minimal when he takes to the stage, starting on November 28th at Brisbane's Empire club and finishing up at Wellington's Curve Bar on December 13th.

Label of the month: R&S Records

After a string of seminal releases in the late '80s and early '90s, R&S Records slowly slid into obscurity. But now, the imprint is back and better than ever, with releases celebrating its past and looking firmly into the future. RA's David Stubbs investigates...

"James Brown," Henry Rollins once spat contemptuously, "could never have come from Belgium!" And yet, this unassuming lowlands country, victim of the truism that you'd be hard pressed to find ten famous people who came from the place, has played a key role in the development and delivery of dance music, especially as the '80s turned into the '90s. Groups like Underground Resistance acknowledged as much when they cut their "Belgian Resistance" single, while in 1991, Joey Beltram remarked in an interview, "The Belgians were the first people who could relate to me. Belgium was very, very advanced."

So much so that Renaat Vandepapeliere founded the Belgian R&S dance label back in 1984, the name deriving from the initials of his own name and that of his partner, Sabine Maes. Vandepapeliere had worked as a DJ, playing soul, jazz fusion and funk as well as electronic, but had become frustrated with the way that American imports were treated when they reached Belgium. "Working in a music shop and seeing what happened when imports came in, there was a very bad habit in Belgium, when an import became very big in the clubs, someone would go to the studio and make an imitation of it, a copy, which was cheaper but also rubbish. I always had a difficulty with that. So that's why we started—so that we could license the original stuff."

Initially going under the name Milos Music Belgium, the couple released a single vinyl 12-inch by forgotten Belgian duo Big Tony. As the '80s wore on, however, Belgium was attracting international attention for homegrown movements such as New Beat (big, electro-brutalist floorstompers fronted by the likes of The Lords Of Acid and Jade 4U), as well as the more visually arresting likes of Front 242, whose sample-heavy "electronic body music" flirted dangerously with terrorist chic and geopolitics on tracks like "Funk Ghadaffi."

A bluffer's guide to R&S

Aphex Twin - Analogue Bubblebath
Along with "Didgeridoo," here was where Richard James, AKA Aphex Twin, announced himself to the world, taking the post-acid scene to a darker, more fertile place with this sombrely anthemic classic.

Second Phase - Mentasm
The temporary AKA of Joey Beltram, Second Phase and "Mentasm" was a pivotal '90s release, a perverse, pitch-black variant on acid with a rogue strain of Black Sabbath-style heaviness whizzing round its circuitry.

Human Resource - Dominator
"I wanna kiss myself!" snarls the rapper with meta-narcissistic robo-insistency on this sternly hedonistic Eurodisco milestone, the mutant "Mentasmic" riff erasing like windscreen wipers on full power throughout.

Jam & Spoon - Stella
First released in 1992, "Stella" opened up a skylight for those who found the R&S oeuvre stifling at times. It's a mellow-cholic masterpiece, all galloping keyboards and a respirating synth pulse which anticipates everything from LTJ Bukem to the lush, minimal techno of Kompakt.

Radio Slave - Eyes Wide Open/Incognito
R&S come right up to speed with this storming release from the much-respected Matt Edwards, AKA Radio Slave, two minimal, bass and percussion-led dancefloor-to-air odysseys which easily evoke R&S's best traditions: Pleasure and discipline.

"It was quite radical and paved the way for what we know as techno-house," says Vandepapeliere of those times. "The whole Belgian scene opened doors for the entire world. Of course, tracks were made all over the world, Belgium was not exclusive, but the audiences here were really open to electronic music very early on. They are very open-minded, still today. That's why it was a special place at that time, especially in clubs like Boccaccio, in my home town of Ghent. When people opened up similar clubs in other countries you really felt that this new music was going to unite us all."

Despite the fact that Renaat himself was never personally that interested in the likes of Front 242, the group helped establish Belgium as an unlikely fulcrum of new electronic music. In 1981, Marvin Gaye had taken a lengthy sabbatical in Ostend, prior to recording his album Midnight Love. By the late '80s, it seemed less far-fetched for Derrick May to be flown over by Renaat from Detroit to Belgium instead. But this was prior to the era of DJ culture, the rise of which personally dismayed the label owner.

"For artists like Derrick, their dream back then was making records. When the DJ became the star, to me that's when things went all wrong. When they were earning thousands of pounds, playing just the music that the public wanted in short sets—I thought it was better when they made records which came from the heart."

While Vandepapeliere certainly harboured some utopian ideas about dance music, in those initial, post-rave years, the music was becoming darker, and heavier, with a sense of heaving claustrophobia characterising clubs like Boccaccio. By 1991, this was reflected in the In Order to Dance series inaugurated by R&S, which collected together the various singles they issued. These included early works by Moby, Model 500, but also Joey Beltram, whose "Energy Flash" and "Mentasm" (released under the name Second Phase) helped define a grimly hedonistic shift in dance, in which the music became hurts-so-good, hard work full of punishing dirges typified by murky bass and neon throbbing.

"The year after we released 'Mentasm,' two years after, every record that came out sounded like 'Mentasm,'" recalls Vandepapeliere. "It was a compliment, in a way, for Joey, for the label, but it was also annoying. That was the mentality of commercial labels, though—copying, not creating."

He also introduced the world to The Aphex Twin, whose "Didgeridoo," based around a single note on the traditional antipodean instrument showed that it was possible to dispense with a tune altogether and have a huge hit. "He came up with something original there, for sure," says Vandepapeliere. "I always say, no one ever came close to Richard (James), no one. Many tried, no one came close. He is unique."

With cuts by CJ Bolland, Human Resource and Golden Girls' "Kinetic," gloriously remixed by Orbital, DJ Hell and Jaydee, R&S appeared to set the tone of the 1991 dance scene, the music matching the intensity and high temperatures physically experienced on the European dancefloors at the time. "The main club was Omen in Frankfurt, which I went to every week, then spread to Holland. Talk about claustrophobia. Christ! It was very intense and very real in a way I don't see today." Elsewhere, dance music was being reduced to a very very macho, 'ardkore. And yet, despite having been regarded as a champion of that sort of music, Vandepapeliere never really cared for it. "If you listen back to the records we made back then, it wasn't just noise for the sake of noise. Those were always funky records," he protests.

"I never was into the idea that 'electronic music = no emotion.' Personally, I need some soul, or funk, or a little melody mixed in. Some emotion. Otherwise it does nothing for me. My philosophy has been, always put out records that women would dance to. Make records for women. If the women dance, so will the men."

PLUSMOVE Time Travel To 2099 and Reveal The Future Of Dance

After years of pounding at the backstage door, it’s pretty much official: dance music is the new punk rock. CBGBs is no more, and guitars are swiftly being eclipsed by laptops, but the DIY aesthetic is alive and well. So it’s only fitting that the future of American dance music should emerge in the form of two New England Art Institute grads, Josh Shifrin and Paul Mihailoff, who left behind their punk rock and hip-hop pasts to form Plus Move, an electronic act obsessed with the future. And for good reason - they’ve been there. “It’s kind of weird how we got into this,” Mihailoff admits,recalling a time back in Boston before they learned the art of time travel. Both he and Shifrin were playing in rock bands, with their only common thread was a shared interest in Radiohead.

“I was actually into producing hip-hop beats when we first met, and
I threw Daft Punk in the same category as the bland, repetitive,
four-on-the-floor stuff that I couldn’t get into. But once I understood
the energy behind it, I started listening to all the other French producers.”

Plus Move got everyone’s attention when they leaked their bootleg
remix of Justice’s funk-squelch anthem “D.A.N.C.E” to some of their
favorite music blogs back in the summer of 2007. “We first heard the
song as a radio rip,” Shifrin recalls. “It wasn’t even the full song
or the final version, but we fell in love with it and immediately
chopped the shit out of the track to get rid of the radio noise,
re-worked it completely and sent it back out to every blog that we
liked. Before we knew it, we were getting emails from people all over
the world.”

One of those emails got their attention more than the other messages
from crazed fans. It was an anonymous invitation to a meeting in a
basement underneath M.I.T., just minutes from the Plus Move studio.
Shifrin and Mihailoff are reluctant to reveal specifics, but the story
goes that they were introduced to someone they refer to cryptically
as“Sphinx.” When asked if “Sphinx” is the mythical being described in
Egyptian and Greek mythology, Plus Move boldly puts forth that Sphinx
“has taken many different forms throughout time.”

The next part of the story may be even less credible, yet the
recordings that make up the “2099” EP are presented for your
consideration. Plus Move claim to have traveled through time with
Sphinx to the year 2099, where together they defeated the evil ruler
BOSS. In the ensuing days spent in 2099, Plus Move and Sphinx recorded
these songs and brought them back to the present day as documented
proof of their travels.

The cool heads at Expansion Team Records, for whom the duo had
previously remixed a Ready Fire Aim track, immediately took notice of
the change in Shifrin and Mihailoff’s disposition. The “2099”
recordings shifted and morphed with more unpredictable dynamics than a
multi-car pileup, equal parts apocalypse and apotheosis in the mix.
Label boss and fellow futurist Alex Moulton lent his ear to the music,
helping co-produce the songs to make them understandable to early-21st
century ears.

Plus Move recently relocated to Austin, Texas, a move necessitated by
the need for physical space to assemble their next secret project. The
duo are reportedly building a structure they believe is a time machine
that allows for hundreds (if not thousands) of fans to join them on
their subsequent journeys to the future. How’s that for DIY?

Da Lata return with ‘this is not your job’

November 10th 2008 heralds the return of London-based cult afro-Latin-funk duo Da Lata with ‘This Is Not Your Job’, plus disco and deep house remixes from Faze Action, The Layabouts and Yass.

Key members Patrick Forge and Chris Franck are joined by Senegalese singer/Kora player Diabel Cissokho, previously of the internationally renowned Baba Maal. Cissokho has also played alongside the likes of African A-listers Femi Kuti and Manu Dibango.

A rugged, bumpy hoedown, ‘This Is Not Your Job’ melds a mind-boggling array of styles and instruments from around the word, with the common link being a steely focus on the dancefloor. This floorfiller in waiting is, incidentally, topped-off with one of the most memorable guitar riffs in ages.

Having known one another for over ten years, Christian Franck and Patrick Forge make up the core of Da Lata and are often joined by a spectrum of talented musicians. Chris has been involved in Latin/jazz/soul circles for many years and has worked with key players of the international scene.

Chris Franck was initially in a band called Batu, when Broadcaster/ DJ Patrick Forge became involved after hearing a demo. Their sound appealed to Patrick, who was up for the challenge of working with a live band, citing his role as ‘creative nuisance’. The early release ‘Seasons Of My Mind’ grew in reputation as an anthem in jazz-dance circles worldwide.

The follow-up was a version of Edu Lobo’s Brazilian classic Ponteio and put Da Lata on the map, following support from Francois K and Joe Claussell, who developed the track’s classic status at their revered club night Body and Soul.

Patrick Forge met Nina Miranda in a club in Rio, heard the demo of her underground anthem ‘Underwater Love’ and on Nina’s return to London, introduced her to Chris. Smoke City was born and ‘Underwater Love’ crossed-over to become a major hit in 1996.

Ministry of Sound London, the world’s most renowned clubbing venue, will launch its very own DJ Academy on 5th December 2008. A unique one day course that will invite music enthusiasts from all over the globe on to its legendary soundsystem, to study DJ skills with the biggest names in dance music including Danny Rampling, Ray Keith, Chad Jackson and Karl Brown.

Since Ministry of Sound first opened its doors back in 1991 it has become the venue that DJ’s and clubbers have admired. Whether on the decks or on the dancefloor, dance music enthusiasts have travelled far and wide to become a part of the Ministry of Sound experience. Now the club is giving dance music fanatics the opportunity to go behind the scenes to kick start their own DJ career, and learn first hand exactly why it has become the most pioneering and celebrated venue to ever exist in clubland.

TUITION

Starting on Friday the 5th December, and taking place every month thereafter, the MoS DJ Academy will introduce a DJ teaching course to rival all courses of its type currently in the market. The course, which has been devised by Jim Jomoa a DJ & Producer and full time DJ Lecturer at the ACM in Guildford, will provide students with an intensive one day insight into the world of dance music, guiding them through a full DJ aptitude programme whilst also supplying vital information about the nightlife industry, its many career options and guidance towards how to market and develop oneself as a DJ in what has become a very desirable workplace.

TUTORS

The real significance for anyone choosing this course lies in its tutorial team which is made up of eight of dance music’s most legendary DJ’s, all of whom have shaped and influenced their respective genre and scene via their input as DJ’s, promoters and producers. First up is Danny Rampling, reverently known as the Godfather of the British house music scene and a legend all over the globe who will be joined by Karl Tuff Enuff Brown, one half of DJ and production duo TuffJam, a team that alone are held responsible for the emergence of the ‘UK Garage’ scene. Next up is Ray Keith one of Drum & Bass’ foremost DJ’s and remixers whose weekly spot on Kiss 100 continues to supply the most upfront music from this genre. Chad Jackson, one of the UK’s first ever DJ’s and the architect of the ‘Madchester’ house music scene made famous by his legendary Hacienda residency, will also be supplying his extensive experience and knowledge alongside Jazzy M, the first DJ to ever play at Ministry of Sound on its opening night. LAS VEGAS – Trance DJ Christopher Lawrence was named the 2008 winner of the America’s Best DJ contest on Tuesday, September 2, during a ceremony at Roug at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Lawrence was presented with a gold medal and a gold-plated Pioneer DJM-800 mixer – the only one in existence.

Turntablist legend DJ Qbert took the silver, and DJ/rock star DJ Skribble took the bronze.

After the presentation of the awards by dance recording artist Kristine W, the three medalists – and No. 5 finisher DJ Scotty Boy – played special sets for an enthusiastic Rouge crowd.

The ceremony was the culmination of a four-month contest and tour, presented by Pioneer Pro DJ and DJ Times magazine. Since June, the top 100 DJs in America – as selected by the editors of DJ Times – have solicited their fans to vote for them, both online at www.americasbestdj.net, and at 40 official ABDJ events at nightclubs and festivals nationwide. By the time the polls closed on August 16, over 35,000 had voted.

Lawrence is a DJ and producer specializing in progressive trance music, who has played for crowds of over 100,000 at festivals worldwide. Beatport ends affiliate program

Digital download store Beatport has decided to discontinue its affiliate program.

In a message sent to labels and artists today, Beatport Management informed affiliates that the company had "made a business decision to shut down" the program, and asked that "all banners, buttons, text links, product images and store fronts" be taken down.

When reached for comment, Beatport's VP of Marketing Shawn Sabo confirmed the e-mail's contents, adding that "The affiliate program was not driving the relevant leads we had anticipated to [the site]. Moving into 2009, we have a plan to work with and support electronic music portals around the globe. We will be contacting these portals directly with Beatport's new offer."

Sabo also pointed out that the company's decision was to a lesser extent also driven by a desire to rid itself of associations with fraudulent mp3 blogs and forums that gave away releases for free, then drove traffic to Beatport from banners and text linking to the retailer.

(Presumably a reference to the new site that allows producers to more easily share their music with one another that bears the same name.) Speedy (real name Jochem Paap) has had recent collaborations with Adam Beyer, Chris Liebling and George Issakidis, but it could be you that features alongside him on the new record, due to be released on his own label, Electric Deluxe.

Surprisingly enough, in this era of on-spec remixes done for nothing, Jochem has said that he wants to split all of the profits 50/50 with the artists that are involved. No guidelines have been given as far as what material he's looking for, so even the most basic of sounds and loops should be eligible. Animal Collective gather around the Merriweather Post Pavilion

The Brooklyn-based indie quartet Animal Collective will release their ninth studio album, Merriweather Post Pavilion, early next year.

The group, whose love affair with the minimal techno reached new heights last year when they invited Pantha Du Prince to remix a track, has barely done more than announce the record, but RA scribe Andy Beta has had the good fortune to have heard the record and reported on his blog that the record made him ask whether the band had "been hanging out in Berlin techno clubs on tour" and sounded as though the group had "just discovered Ecstasy." For a quartet that already sounded as if they might be taking some of the best drugs in the world, we can only be excited about the possibilities inherent in that statement. Judging by its triptastic cover art alone, we should be in for an exciting ride.

Mint Club, the Leeds venue, will re-open its doors on September 6 after an extensive six week, £500,000 refurbishment.

With exclusive events from Cocoon and Kompakt planned between September and December, the Mint Club will usher in a new era, while maintaining the feel that the venue has been known for.

“We are confident that the club will be extra special but will still maintain the intimate feel that clubbers, DJs and live acts alike have come to know and love about the Mint Club,” said the owner, Shane Graham.

The first and third Saturday of the month will bring the new techno night System to the club, and will feature opening night guests Redshape, Len Faki and Jamie Anderson. The fourth Saturday will welcome back Asylum, a night of underground disco and house, and the second Saturday of the month will feature the electro house night Filth.

1. Moby

DJ? Artist? Producer? Author? Restaurant Mogul? There isn't a single title that can be used to encompass the multitalented genius known as Moby. Taking a break between a promotional tour and a concert tour, Moby took a few minutes to talk to us about his new album "Hotel," the joys of Teany and political activism.

2. Underworld

Dance artists rarely make it past one album, much less to a greatest hits album. Underworld is not a typical dance artist and Anthology 1992-2002 is not a greatest hits album, but rather a collection of songs that document ten years of music from white labels to major soundtracks by one of the most important electronic music artists. Karl Hyde spoke to us about the progression of Underworld through their unique live shows and creative visions that keep us all jumping on the dancefloor.

3. Mylo

Mylo's debut CD "Destroy Rock and Roll" spawned the massive club anthems "Drop the Pressure" and "In My Arms." Critical praise and commercial success assured an eventual US release, led by the mashup "Doctor Pressure" which layered Miami Sound Machine's "Doctor Beat" over "Drop the Pressure." Taking a break between albums, Mylo (born Myles MacInnes) is touring the world as a DJ and recently made a stop in New York to play a party for internet record label Recall Records.

4. Scissor Sisters

Scissor Sisters are redefining pop music with a playful edge; fusing rock, dance, and just about everything else with incredibly well-written songs with hooks that force you to sing along. Baby Daddy teamed up with lead singer Jake Shears to form the nucleus which expanded to include self described "drag queen stuck in a woman's body" Ana Matronic, drummer Paddy Boom and guitarist Del Marquis.

5. Infusion

Springing from intense afterschool discussions about Depeche Mode and the fecund sounds emerging from the international rave scene, Infusion (Manuel Sharrad, Jamie Stevens, and Frank Xavier) have been delivering quality dance music since their first 12” “Smokescreen,” bringing creativity and fierce energy with their productions and remixes ever since then.

6. Prodigy

Is electro the new punk rock? On The Prodigy's new album, Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned, Liam Howlett goes back to his punk roots, exploring his influences and mashing them together in his laptop. Inviting people as varied as Kool Keith, Juliette Lewis, Princess Superstar and Twista along for the ride, the CD is like one we have never experienced before.

7. Junkie XL

Following up the gargantuan concept album Radio JXL with the more personal and instrospective Today, Junkie XL goes back to his musical roots, building the album around the guitar, the instrument he is most comfortable with. Not that he hasn't been busy lately, remixing everyone from Coldplay to Britney Spears and scoring film soundtracks and videogames, though he might be best known for his work with Elvis.

8. Conjure One (Rhys Fulber)

Few artists can honestly say that they witnessed and contributed to the birth of modern industrial music... Rhys Fulber can. Widely known for his work with Austrian musician Bill Leeb on a little project called Frontline Assembly, Fulber has cemented the use of synthesizers and electronic drums in industrial music. Since Frontline Assembly, Fulber has expanded his musical horizons by composing for numerous side projects such as Intermix, Delirium, Synaesthesia and now Conjure One.

9. Kraak and Smaak

And you thought Dutch dance music began and ended with only trance music? Kraak & Smaak, the team of Mark Kneppers, Oscar De Jong and Wim Plug, break the mold with funky house rhythms from a DIY perspective. Whether you experience their performances as a live band, their intense DJ sets, or their cutting-edge videos, you will definitely groove to the tracks from their impressive debut CD "Boogie Angst."

10. Second Sun

Voraciously energetic performers, the members of Second Sun are up-and-comers to watch. Not since The Prodigy have electronica artists been such engaging crowd pleasers. With their artist album in stores now, Antoine and Adam are touring North America this summer.

At the Mansion in Miami, Tiësto rocked the crowd for a non-stop set that has already become the stuff of legend. Magnetic visuals, creative performance artists and a stunning vocal performance by Jes completed the scene for a magical evening.

2. Paul Van Dyk

With a grammy nomination, a number one spot on DJ Magazine’s list of the Top Global DJs and the incredible Politics of Dancing 2 compilation, it’s been a great year for Paul Van Dyk. As a pioneer of electronic music, he breaks down genre and technological boundaries to entertain and unite the people of the world.

3. Judge Jules

6. Christopher Lawrence

The highest ranking US DJ on DJ Magazine's influential Top 100 poll for 2004, Chris has sold over 250,000 CDs and flies more miles than that annually to play around the world. Even after receiving just about every accolade possible, Christopher Lawrence is still down to earth and one of the hardest-working DJs out there, spreading his love of trance music to the people.

7. ATB

Andre Tanneberger might be best known for his earliest hits "9pm (Til I Come)" and "Don't Stop" but his fourth CD "Addicted to Music" showcases a musical progression that could attract a whole new audience to his style of trance music. Known as ATB, he has been touring the world in support of his albums and bringing his music to the people.

8. Armin van Buuren

Ranked the #5 DJ in the world by the infamous DJ Magazine poll, Armin Van Buuren is touring the US to promote his new album "76." The album is completely self-produced with guest vocals from Ray Wilson (Genesis), Justine Suissa, Victoria Horn and rock band Krezip. Armin talks proudly of his studio work, radio shows and marathon DJ sets in his efforts to bring trance music to the people.

DJ Sneak goes to the warehouse

DJ Sneak and Sven Weisemann headlined Brand New Fiction's warehouse party last September at Corsica Studios.

The duo seem like unlikely deckfellows: Sneak is a house music elder, one of Chicago's finest talents, while Weisemann is a sprightly 23 years old. Both, though, have only played London only a few times, and with this being Sneak's first journey to the capital in more than two years, was a special one. Not enough to whet your appetite? Sneak performed four hours of mayhem with support in the evening from Acid Casuals DJs PAPS (AKA Cian Ciaran of the Super Furry Animals), The 5pm Fridays and Mark James.

Ministry of Sound turns seventeen

Trentemøller, Danny Howells and Mark Knight where among the performers cutting the cake last September at Ministry of Sound's 17th birthday party.

It's an age that doesn't get a lot of love, but every year that a club can continue in London's cutthroat environment deserves a bit of recognition and that's exactly what the trio of performers did in the main room at MoS. The evening was billed as a 1991-centric "Kid n Play House Party." We're thinking that Mr Howells will have few problems fitting in, as he does a similar era-driven night each year at Miami's Winter Music Conference for the '80s.

Along with the graffiti artists and breakdancers promised, Ministry was also graced by Ashley Beedle and legendary electro man Afrika Bambaataa.

Dance music legends New Order saw their '80s full-lengths re-released last month on Rhino.

Billed as collector's editions, Movement, Power, Corruption & Lies, Low-Life, Brotherhood and Technique will each feature a bonus disc that contains a host of material that the group released around the time of each album's release that never made it on to the full-length proper. Even so, New Order fan forums are a-buzzin' with the missed opportunity to actually provide diehards with material that they might actually not have heard before. With Peter Hook recently announcing the band has been finally dissolved, we're guessing that the interest—aside from interviews that are promised in each of the reissue's liner notes—just wasn't there.

For the beginner, however, this may just be an excellent way to start your journey into the world of New Order, especially considering some of the group's best work was done on singles that never made an appearance on a full-length—most notably the group's classic "Blue Monday."

Roger Sanchez cancels Field Day appearance

The organizers of the Field Day festival have announced that Roger Sanchez will not be performing as advertised on New Year's Day 2009 in Sydney.

In an announcement yesterday, Field Day didn't apologize for the cancellation, as in their eyes the blame should be aimed elsewhere.

Despite Field Day getting 100% booking confirmation in writing, approval of billing, artwork and playing time from Roger Sanchez’s agent way back in September (before we began advertising), his agent has informed us that Roger is also booked to play New Year’s Eve in Germany and cannot come to Australia. We are incredulous that this massive a mistake could have been made by an agent and act at this level.

Being the responsible event planners they are, the announcement came with a worthy replacement to the proceedings. Now, instead of Sanchez, Syndey partygoers will have the chance to see Eric Prydz again over the holiday. Being a last minute replacement, Prydz will have a busy schedule: He's also set to perform at Sydney's Shore Thing on December 31st and Melbourne's Summadayze on January 1st.

Carl Craig plays Chinese Laundry on NYE

One of Detroit techno's finest, Carl Craig, will be heading to Sydney later this year to headline the New Year's Eve party at Chinese Laundry.

It's been four years since the Grammy nominated producer made his way to Australian shores, so expect a few special tracks for the occasion. As a DJ, Craig is known for his varied and unpredictable sets of multiple genres and sounds. Besides: Where else would you want to be on New Year's Eve anyway?

Kraak & Smaak tour North America

Dutch breaks trio Kraak & Smaak will be touring throughout North American this fall.

Wim Plug, Oscar de Jong and Mark Kneppers have taken on a host of collaborators to make the K & S name an umbrella for a formidable live band. And the group will be hitting a number of dates throughout November in the United States and a solitary show in British Columbia to prove it. They'll be touring on the back of their recent Ultra album, Plastic People, which saw the band mix "banjo twang, disco suave synths, hints of a string orchestra, gypsy-tinged clarinet melody and the soulful broken beat." We can't argue with that. Here's hoping for the band's sake that audiences in Lawrence, Kansas can't do so either.

As things begin to fully cool down in the Northern Hemisphere, things are heating up closer to the Equator and below it. This month, we've got festivals in South America, Mexico and Australia. But don't count out Europe quite yet: The partying doesn't stop just because it's cold outside. It just means that things are moved into arenas like the Flanders Expo Centre and Katowice's Spodek. Another year, another Creamfields. But if you think that this celebrated festival brand has lost its luster, think again. The organizers for the Argentinean edition this year have enlisted just about every genre star you could think of with the likes of UNKLE, Hernan Cattaneo, Carl Craig, Gorillaz, Erick Morillo, Simian Mobile Disco, Booka Shade, Derrick May, Deadmau5, Apparat, Radio Slave, Gui Boratto and more scheduled to play. Sure, you may standing among thousands of your best friends for 16 long hours to see everything you want, but when has that ever stopped an enterprising partygoer?

Do you love a bit of electronic music and happen to be independently wealthy? Coma, the Middle East's first music festival of its kind may just be for you. The first edition of this fascinating sounding party is set to go off on a private island twenty minutes from the coast of Abu Dhabi. (Don't worry, they'll pick you up and take you there by boat.) Then, the second day of the event is set to be held in an entirely different country (Lebanon). We're still not sure if the organizers expect revelers to attend both, but we're booking a private jet to take us there anyway. Sandy Rivera, Meat Katie, Wally Lopez, Nic Fanciulli are set to play the first date, while Lopez will play Lebanon as well along with Christopher Lawrence, John Acquaviva and Cosmic Gate.

Coming up on its 43rd edition, the Southport Weekender is in almost uncomfortable position. How do you continue to top yourself after 20 solid years? How do you convince people to come to the second part of your 21st birthday when you went all out the previous year? The answer to these questions are pretty simple: Book a great lineup. And that's exactly what they've done. As always, the focus is on the soulful side of things, with plenty of respected names. Dennis Ferrer, Gilles Peterson, Rick Wilhite, Tony Humphries and hip-hoppers De La Soul all will feature and help to make it one of the most mature fun times you may ever have. Until next year that is.

Questions about stability have dogged Katowice, Poland's Spodek throughout its history. But the city's large saucer-shaped arena has endured Boney M, Slipknot, Megadeth and Jean-Michel Jarre over the course of its near-40 year history, so we're going to assume that the monolithic minimal of Sven Väth, techno godfather Westbam, Bad Boy Bill and a host of others won't make the thing cave in. But we're also pretty sure that they're going to do their best to see if they can't tear the roof off nonetheless. With Extrawelt and Lützenkirchen also playing live—among others—don't be surprised if you find yourself seeing daylight as Uncle Sven unleashes his headlining set.

RA pick: Gregor Tresher's DJ sets have restored our faith in electrohouse more than once. Expect him to do it here again.

06. Bordernoise

Whether it be the experimental-leaning Mutek or Interface or the big room sounds of Creamfields, Mexico has become a strong player on the festival stage in the past few years. (With artist guarantees that boggle the mind, we can't blame 'em.) Bordernoise, which will hold its third edition in November, hews closer to the Creamfields template, but with a slightly more credible line-up. To wit: This year's line-up boasts Soulwax, Boys Noize, Adam Freeland, James Zabiela, Steve Lawler, Tiefschwarz and Audiofly. With a human-scaled three day agenda in place, we're betting that after Bordernoise that the region's reputation is only going to rise.

Want to know what it's like to live the life of a superstar DJ? Follow around Carl Cox on November 22 and November 29 as he plays two headlining shows at the Stereosonic08 Festival in different cities on the same day. Cox-y, Booka Shade and other will be playing double duty on a Brisbane/Sydney double bill on the first weekend, while they'll do the same thing in Melbourne and Adelaide the next. It'll make for some confusing set times, we're guessing, if you happen to live in one of those cities, but then again you'll still be seeing the likes DJ Hell, Sneaky Sound System, Vitalic, Crookers, Paul Van Dyk and others throughout the day, so just make sure you get there early—just in case the one that you want to see is booked elsewhere for later.

Kraftwerk. It's pretty much the only word you need to know about Global Gathering Australia. Sure, they may have Mark Ronson, Fischerspooner's Oz debut, prog kingpin Sasha, trance gods Above & Beyond, Chicago house don Felix Da Housecat, ambient overlords The Orb and many more set to perform in the festival brand's debut jaunt across the continent. But, seriously, Kraftwerk makes this the easy choice for any electronic fan trying to figure out how to begin their festival season Down Under.

03. Time Warp Holland

It seems like you're not a festival these days if you aren't doing a version of your festival in another city. Time Warp, one of Mannheim's best, is no exception. This year, they're taking their party on the road to Rottedam for a Holland edition of the celebrated event. The organizers are billing it as a friendly competition between the two countries with Joris Voorn squaring off with Johnny D, up-and-comer Rauwkost aiming his gear at Marco Carola and France's Laurent Garnier and Romania's [a:rpia:r] boys presumably acting as neutral observers to it all.

RA pick: We still can't get Laurent Garnier's RA podcast out of our heads. Maybe seeing him here will do the trick?

02. Club to Club

As RA's Lee Smith pointed out in his review of Club to Club 2007, the festival only seems to be getting better and better. Judging by this year's line-up, we can't help but think that assessment will be much the same come November 9th. A fascinating triple bill of Ellen Allien, Magda and Theo Parrish has got our mouths watering, while James Holden playing for three hours after a live set by Four Tet doesn't sound that bad either. Factor in some Raster-Noton and Moritz von Oswald Trio experiments and dubstep from the likes of Benga and Skream and we're just about ready to book our flight.

RA pick: On Day 3, check in with the simultaneous party going off in Rotterdam before heading out to Allien, Magda and Parrish.

01. I Love Techno

The Belgians love their techno festivals, and I Love Techno might just be one of the best. Underworld, Richie Hawtin, Justice, Booka Shade, Robert Hood, Marcel Dettmann, Kabale und Liebe and a ridiculous amount of others are all set to perform at the 13th edition of the festival which brings together 35,000 festival goers to the Flanders Expo Centre. Sure, it's only one night. But that's a good thing: If someone isn't having a good set, there's plenty more to choose from.

RA pick: Underworld's been at this thing for years, but we can't help but think that there's a reason for that.

Clubbing in New York City

What's it like in Gotham City these days? RA's Todd L. Burns goes out for seven days straight to find out.

At first, I called it an experiment. Then, an endurance test. By the end, it was simply drudgery. The concept: Go out for seven nights straight in New York City to as many different club nights as possible. Report back about "the scene" and its relative health.

At the end, I hoped to be able to answer a few questions: How much does it cost—mentally, physically and, most importantly, monetarily—to go clubbing in New York City these days? Is the city actually suffering from the anti-nightclub laws put in place by Mayor Giuliani's administration that we all hear so much about? Who's up? Who's down? Who cares?

The answer, by the final night, was most assuredly not me. But while I didn't get a chance to attend some major promoter's parties (Basic NYC, FIXED and Minimoo come immediately to mind) or hit venues that are integral to the clubbing culture in the city (Webster Hall, Sullivan Room and Pacha NYC to name but a few), what follows is as comprehensive of a snapshot of the city in late August 2008 as I can provide. There's house, techno, disco and drum & bass to be had in the city—and I tried to find it, while fighting vainly to stay awake on the subway on my ride home each night.

My first stop in the seven day clubbing journey was the West Village's Le Royale to check out Justin Miller, Jacques Renault and Holy Ghost. Le Royale was once called Luke & Leroy's and home to MisShapes, a night that the New York Times aptly called the "ur-hipster party." Tonight, though, there were no block-long lines outside. (The fact that it was 11 PM probably helped.) Instead, the crowd that floated in and out of the upstairs room where Miller and Renault traded off DJing duties was a mixed one that seemed to have little concern for who was behind the decks. It could be argued this was the same case with MisShapes, but here people weren't really checking each other out as much as they seemed to simply have come to a bar. With music. And dancing. That last part didn't start until around 12:00, but by the time that I left thirty minutes later, the dance floor was full, enjoying the likes of Sister Sledge's "Lost in Music" and Hercules & Love Affair's remix of Aeroplane's "Whispers."

The biggest decision you can make in New York—if you're going to try go to different shows in one night—is transportation. In an attempt to keep costs down as much as possible throughout the week, I tried to only use cabs when there was no other reasonable option. That meant, tonight at least, I went on foot over to Bar 13. After 20 minutes, I arrived at the upstairs bar at the Union Square venue to find that I could have probably crawled: At 12:50, opening DJ Eric Cloutier was playing to a listless crowd of about 12 people. Well, listless aside from the couple passionately making out in the middle of the dance floor. Blk|Market Membership, the group responsible for the night, had flown in Frankfurt's Markus Fix as the headliner and while I was excited to see him, I certainly had my doubts going in about his potential to pull a sizeable crowd. Sure, Cécille and Oslo may soundtrack much of minimal techno's sets these days, but does anyone really know or care about anyone beyond Johnny D or SIS? It didn't seem like it at Bar 13. Blk|Market has put on a number of great parties in a variety of spaces, most notably Bar 13, Love and Cielo, but this night seemed oddly quiet.

At 2:00 AM, I went over to Brooklyn to catch the tail-end of Akufen's set at The Bunker. I will always have a place in my heart for the party, as it was my proper introduction to electronic music when I moved to New York in 2004. Back then it was held in the basement of an experimental music venue called Tonic. The dark, seedy confines of the tiny club—if you could even call it a club—was exactly the sort of entry point that I needed to get acclimated to live electronic music. (I'd been listening to electronic music long before that, but Columbus, Ohio didn't offer many options for clubbing at the time.) Spinoza has been the major player behind the party for the entire time that I've been in the city, and he's put on a show every single Friday night for more than five years. Spinoza and current resident DJ Derek Plaslaiko make it easy to take the party for granted and, as a result, there's often a week (or two, or three) that I don't make it out, but I always keep coming back.

This night, it seemed like everyone else did too. Similar to my worries about New Yorkers caring about Markus Fix, I wondered to myself whether anyone really cared about Akufen (AKA Marc Leclair ) anymore. My Way, his defining moment, was released in 2002 and he hasn't put out anything under that particular alias since his Fabric mix in '04. When I got to Public Assembly, though, it was as crowded as I've seen it. My notes on the night tell me that the music wasn't all that great until Derek Plaslaiko came on for the last hour in the evening and bothered to play something aside from the bog-standard minimal. He's pretty much the best local DJ as far as I'm concerned, and on this night he didn't disappoint, closing the night out with minimal techno that actually had a bit of personality to it. If I remember correctly, there may have even been a breakbeat or two. As I left at 4:00 AM in search of a slice of pizza and some reading material for the long ride home to South Brooklyn, I couldn't help but wonder if that wasn't going to be the best night of the week.

Saturday went much like Friday. Start with the soft house stuff, move on to the harder, more unforgiving techno. I began my night at Love, home to one of New York's finest soundsystems, and it was put to good use by Eamon Harkin and James F!@.$%^ Friedman who tag-teamed in advance of Todd Terje's headlining set. Harkin and Friedman prefer a genre-hopping style that never really fully locked the crowd into their vibe, but it seemed exactly the type of set that should be proffered in advance of the Norwegian. Personally, I'm still not completely sold on Love—the line-up of the club is too varied to quite figure out. Their calendar of things like a night of "dramatic belly dance and dance interpretations" is an honorable one, but I fear that it rarely finds itself with a crowd that isn't there for the exact purpose of that night's event. (Admittedly, not always a bad thing.)

Secure in the knowledge that I'd be seeing Terje play on Monday, I went to the subway to go to Queens and Water Taxi Beach. While I had been extremely excited about the party earlier on the week, Efdemin canceled at the last minute over fears about customs and Troydon was drafted to fill to in. After initially being turned away at the door—the Water Taxi Beach stops letting people in at 2 AM, even though it officially closes at 3 AM—I was let in under the pretense that I was to drive one of the DJs home. (The more implausible the story, the more likely a door person will believe it.) Inside, Justin Carter was winding down the night with some soulful house music that turned into straight-up old-school R&B by set's end. Carter, who was one of the guys responsible for bringing in the likes of Omar-S, Moodymann and My Cousin Roy to the weekly Water Taxi Beach party this summer, obviously learned well from the DJs that he booked: Eclecticism is key. At a party like this one, where there is a built-in audience that will come simply for the novelty of a beach in New York—an advantage Love can't claim—you can get away with almost anything.

After a short car back to Brooklyn, I found myself at ReSolute, wherever that was, in some sort of abandoned warehouse space with the offer of an open bar and plenty of minimal techno provided by Someone Else, Kyle Geiger and Connie. The event, run by a pair of Eastern Europeans with a penchant for secret locations, operates in a similar fashion to the famed Minimoo parties, yet maintains a slightly more inviting stance to the outsider. To be honest, I don't remember much about the music aside from the unrelenting dedication to the build-up…and comedown…the build-up...and comedown. But it's a neat trick to play one song for what seems like three hours, and I was in the frame of mind to enjoy it. After a brief stop at an afterparty, I somehow found my way home. But not before forgetting to tell the driver my address was in Brooklyn and enduring a lengthy detour as a result.

Sunday
Nicky Siano at Santos

On Sunday night in New York, there frankly aren't a lot of options. And that's probably the way it should be. But over the past few months, there has been one significant and stable destination for clubbers looking to wind down the weekend properly: Nicky Siano at Santos Party House. Siano has said that this will be his final hurrah, and on this evening it seemed very much like a victory tour. It was hard to tell if there was a track played that had been made after 1985 throughout the night. (Talking Heads was the closest we got.) To the guy wearing the fisherman's vest, the lady with the white gloves, the girl with the "music defines me" t-shirt or the guy literally pawing one of the pillars, I'm pretty sure this was exactly what they wanted to hear anyway. I came in just as the entire crowd was finishing up a rendition of "Happy Birthday" to a guy decked out in a cowboy hat. He carried around a tambourine throughout the evening, and sounded out accompaniment when appropriate. And not. A throwback? Sure. But this sort of un-self-consciousness was a welcome change to just about anything I'd ever experienced before in a club in New York. Hell, there was someone even dancing barefoot for much of the night.

Monday
Deep Space at Cielo

"Anybody that's crazy enough to be out on a Monday night is going to be there for the music." So says Francois K, in reference to his long-running early week shindig at Cielo. It helps that the club has a prime location: Inside the heart of the meatpacking district, young professionals flock to its confines, fat from a nice dinner with their significant other and ready to "go to a club." To its credit, given its location and that crowd, it could easily book cheesy, increase its bottle service and make tons of cash, but it doesn't. Nicolas Matar, the owner of the club, has a true passion for music and seems eager to take chances with one of the best soundsystems in the city. On this night, the skinny, nerdy Norwegian Todd Terje played deep and diverse to the half-there-for-the-music, half-there-because-it's-Cielo crowd. Like Francois, Terje mixed well, but when the opportunity to switch gears came around, he gladly took it: His edit of Canned Heat's "On the Road Again" and I:Cube's remix of "The Feeling" were highlights, but Leon Haywood's "I Wanna Do Something Freaky to You" closed out the night in typical fashion. I don't think Terje has ever met the word irony. I hope he never does.

The mighty Cielo has one of the best soundsystems in the city

Much is made of the comedown that is Sunday and Monday, but for my money it's Tuesday that suffers most. As I surveyed the RA event listings, I found myself wondering whether club music simply didn't exist on this particular day. After some digging, though, three NYC weeklies seemed to be the best bet for the evening, so I began the night at Sapphire for Deep See, an underground house party featuring EMan, Lola and DJ Spider. Sapphire is what apartment brokers in New York call "cozy": The red-tinted interior consists of four tables, a dance floor ready for about 10 to 15 and a bar. As a warm-up for the rest of the night, it proved to be a good choice, but I couldn't help but wonder what a busy night might entail. With two guys doing some acrobatic dancing, the floor was nearly taken up entirely and my friend and I remained content to sit on the sidelines listening to the old school deep house that flooded the speakers.

Next up, so we thought, would be 205, which for many months held a DFA-related party thrown by Justin Miller. What we didn't realize, though, is that the bar's liquor license had been taken away and that it had been ingloriously featured in that month's Radar Magazine, as the home to hipster hookers. That the club had chosen to print up their schedule on enormous posters featuring the high-class prostitute that brought down New York governor Eliot Spitzer's career seemed colossally funny. Or stupid.

Whatever the case, 205 was closed as we walked by, so we made our way to Sin Sin, the city's longest-running 21+ drum & bass night. To be fair, I stopped listening to drum & bass after Photek went house, and thus have little frame of reference for talking about the genre. That said, the tiny dance floor (perhaps even cozier than Sapphire) rarely got more than three of the club's 20 or so denizens going throughout the night. RA scribe Colin Shields, who was in town earlier that week from England, confirmed to me that drum & bass is still a huge deal in his country, but judging by this evening's musical offering, I can't see that happening over here. Stuck in the ghetto of Volvo soundtracks and incidental music, this music never hit over here and is clearly for the diehards only. The real highlight of the evening, instead, was the guy who made a sign with the words "stand on carpet," wrapped himself in a carpet and deposited himself directly in front of the bar. After 90 minutes of watching people stepping on him—and not stepping to the music—we called it a night.

It's hard to say what happened on Tuesday at Cielo, but when we arrived at the venue on Wednesday night for Louie Vega's Roots party, the vibe was completely different from the relaxed Deep Space crowd of Monday. The normally aloof door people seemed on edge and as we entered into the club, signs were hung prominently that let us know that drug use was illegal and that it would not be tolerated on the premises. Fair enough. After Loco Dice's "Pimp Jackson" and an hour of tribal house, though, the drunken stumble/lack of apology/"relax, relax, relax" crowd got to be a bit much and we headed over to Santos for Special Disco Version.

Ah, yes, disco. Ask any magazine trend piece writer and they'll tell you it's the hot new thing in New York. And while I have little doubt that the music coming from DFA et al. devoted to celebrating—and updating—the sound is fantastic, I have a hard time believing that there is a real revolution afoot in clubs in New York. James Murphy will always draw a crowd. He's James Murphy. But to see if a scene is really taking off, you need to look a little bit deeper. That was the thinking, at least, as we walked into a nearly empty Santos basement at 2 AM. Granted, it was Wednesday, but it was hard to believe that Nicky Siano had drawn a larger crowd on a Sunday night. We heard from reliable sources that things were packed for The Juan Maclean, who had played earlier on in the evening, but as Tim Sweeney played a set that touched on post-punk, classic house and the usual DFA-related tracks, it was hard to tell exactly why nobody was there. Sure, it could've been the bad sound, which left me dancing in one particular area of the club for the hour-and-a-half that I was there, but one wonders if James Murphy had been there how many kids would've stuck around.

A quick guide to New York City is a quixotic task at best, which is why we've chosen to focus on the East Village, as it's central enough to allow easy transportation to the club of your choosing.

Records & DJ gear
Other Music, A1 and Etherea are the best that the area has to offer with the latter being the most dance-centric. Make it over to Brooklyn, though: Halcyon is the best for vinyl fans on the minimal tip, while Dope Jams stocks a more Detroit-heavy lineup.

Bars
For pitchers of beer and a dive bar feel, Grassroots may be your best bet. Grab a $1 dollar basket of popcorn, as well.

Quick bite
Pommes Frites offers up cones of—what else?—french fries and Caracas may not be exactly quick, but it offers up some of the best arepas this side of Venezuela.

Authentic local fare
With an enormous hamburger outside, Paul's Da Burger Joint should have one the best hamburgers in the city. Luckily, it does.

Cafés
The MudSpot prides itself on its coffee, but most people like its garden just as much.

Lodging
Book a room at the Rivington Hotel—even if it isn't in the East Village. It has one of the best views of the city.

Club life is full of twists and turns and I've done my best since becoming a writer to try to block out all of the gossip, inside baseball and exterior stuff out of my mind when talking about parties. That said, it's hard not to notice how far APT has fallen since Justin Carter stepped down as the main booker of the venue. While some crucial nights remain, I could only find one night in this week that I was interested in—when it might've been three only a few months before. I can't say for sure what the situation is at the club, but all of the minor quibbles that once seemed manageable in the face of a set from Maurice Fulton or Stefan Goldmann are much bigger deals now that the music isn't quite as interesting on a regular basis. The weird, awkward rectangular space for dancing seems to be wasting the awesome power of the Funktion One soundsystem, the drinks are overpriced and the vibe suffers as a result.

That's what Still Music's Jerome Derradji is up against as he soldiers on at APT. And I have to say I wasn't hugely surprised that as I entered the basement at 12:00, there were a grand total of five people sitting and enjoying drinks. Things didn't get much more busy in the hour that I stayed there staring intently at my phone and wondering when—and if—a crowd was going to materialize.

I doubt that any of the packed crowd at Alan Braxe's appearance at Santos for the Été D'amour party would've been all that interested in Derradji's eclectic and soulful set. Instead, Braxe set 'em up and knocked 'em down pop house style. Braxe's brand of fun is one that I admittedly have little time for—it reminds me too much of my childhood radio station's "Dance Remixes of Pop Hits" show that would come on late Saturday night when people were headed out to clubs. I can appreciate the craft that goes into it, but I'll take Derradji and an empty room any day of the week. Like many times during the seven days, I simply wished that instead of party hopping throughout the night to fulfill some self-imposed journalistic duty that I could've simply stayed in one place and enjoyed myself. Perhaps more than anything else, that's the most important lesson of all: If you see grass in New York City, treasure it: You may not see it again for a long while amid all the concrete.

Aftermath

So...was it worth it? Monetarily, I'm not so sure: Clubbing is expensive—and the venues I went to were among the least expensive in the city. If you don't want to lose more than 13 hours of your life sitting on the subway, it'll cost you even more. Physically, it hurt as well. If you go hard on one day, it'll ruin you down the line, no matter how many drugs you may take to stave off the inevitable comedown. On Sunday night, for instance, I bought a gin and tonic, had a few sips and had to throw it away. (My liver seemed to be puckering just as much as my face.) Mentally, however, it was most definitely worth it. I spent the week hearing music that I loved, music that I hated and music that I would have never knew existed otherwise.

New York isn't perfect, but anyone who tells you that everything was better years ago is lying. The government, concerned citizens and others have always gotten in the way of people having a fun time, and the fact that Studio B—one of Brooklyn's most popular venues—was closed throughout this week due to license issues is among the many that have suffered as a result. But despite the fact that I didn't see a lot of music that I genuinely loved, I can't help but be optimistic. Small venues and offbeat places are becoming more common, and parties like Resolute are only going to benefit. Besides, plenty of people were loving what they were hearing. If you can't find at least two parties each week in New York that you're interested in going to, you're simply not looking hard enough. Or you need to start your own. With the world economy collapsing around us, there's no better time to begin.

We're at war. The people in charge of running the war say that we have to trust them: trust their integrity, and trust their judgment.
But how can we trust our government to spot terrorists when it thinks that glow sticks are items of "drug paraphernalia?"

This sounds like a joke, but it isn't. Last year, the Department of Justice and the DEA tried to prosecute concert promoters in New Orleans under the federal "crackhouse law." That law makes it a felony to maintain a building or facility for the purpose of drug consumption. Traditionally, the law has been applied to places that are, well, crack houses. But — calling glow sticks and bottled water "drug paraphernalia" — then-U.S. Attorney Eddie Jordan attempted to jail three New Orleans concert promoters by reasoning that (1) people come to raves; (2) people who come to raves sometimes use drugs; (3) concert promoters must know this (especially in light of the presence of "drug paraphernalia"); and so, (4) a rave must be an event that takes place "for the purpose of drug consumption" under the law.
The federal district court made short work of this claim, dismissing the charges and calling them a violation of the First Amendment. But that hasn't stopped our drug warriors.

Now Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., has introduced a bill (the "Reducing Americans' Vulnerability to Ecstasy Act of 2002," cutely called "the RAVE Act"), also sponsored by Sens. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and Richard Durbin, D-Ill. The bill would essentially write into the crackhouse statute the same approach already rejected by the district court in New Orleans. According to The Washington Post:
When he introduced the bill in June, Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., said "most raves are havens for illicit drugs," and congressional findings submitted with the bill label as drug paraphernalia such rave mainstays as bottled water, "chill rooms" and glow sticks.
My three-year-old nephew is fond of bottled water and glow sticks, and usually needs a "chill room." Presumably Biden regards him as a dangerous criminal.

The RAVE Act should, all by itself, serve to explode Democratic claims that it's only the Republicans who pose a danger to civil liberties: nothing in the Bush administration's anti-terror plans would criminalize bottled water. Unfortunately, the RAVE Act (what is it with these cutesy acronyms, anyway?) also suggests that there's a lot of raving going on in Washington — raving lunacy.

The real story is that federal law enforcement efforts against ecstasy have proved impotent. Frustrated by this failure, they've targeted electronic music concerts ("raves") not because they're especially important targets (they're not) but because they're easy, and public, targets.
Unable to endure the continuing evidence of drug-war failure, the drug warriors are lashing out, hoping that the ignorant will be convinced that they're earning their pay. Congress is playing along because, basically, Congress isn't up to the job of riding herd on the massive drug-war bureaucracy.

The drug war has been a massive failure: a waste of money, of lives and of time. It's also been accompanied by extensive inroads on traditional American freedoms: property forfeitures, "no-knock" searches, expanded wiretap authority, and the destruction of financial privacy, to name just a few.

These are inroads that have served the agendas of bureaucrats but that haven't done anything to solve the problem that was claimed as their justification. And the drug war's combination of intrusiveness, corruption and ineptitude calls into question the government's ability to carry out the war on terrorism.

Will the drug war serve as a model for the war on terrorism? Some within the federal bureaucracy seem to think it should, and it's easy to understand why: The drug war may have been a disaster for America, but it has been a three-decade gravy train for bureaucrats. And if Congress can't ride herd on the drug war bureaucracy, it probably won't be able to oversee the terror-war bureaucracy either.

Not being a bureaucrat, I think the drug war is a terrible model. In fact, I think it's an argument against creating a Homeland Security bureaucracy at all. If we can't trust the government to tell a glow stick from a hypodermic needle, then I don't think we can trust it to tell the difference between an American and a terrorist.

I'm willing to support an invasion of Iraq and of other enemy nations like Saudi Arabia or Syria. I'm not willing to support an approach that will turn the United States itself into an occupied country — something the drug war crowd has come a long way toward doing on its own.

The War on Drugs has often been used to suppress music and lifestyles disliked by the political establishment. Local, state, and federal drug laws give the government enormous power and this power has been used to exert control over emerging subcultures. Jazz in the 1940s. Rock and roll in the 1960s. Heavy metal and rap in the 1980s. Electronic music and Hip Hop today.
The RAVE Act which threatens to squash live music and free speech was passed in 2003 when it was tacked onto an unrelated child protection bill. In 2004 there were two additional pieces of legislation considered - the CLEAN-UP Act and the Ecstasy Awareness Act - that threatened to widen the laws to prosecute anyone who holds an event and fails to prevent illicit drug use.
Senator Joe Biden (D-DE) forced the controversial legislation commonly known as the "RAVE" Act through both houses of Congress as an attachment to an unrelated child abduction bill. The "RAVE" Act, also referred to as the Illicit Drug Anti-Proliferation Act of 2003, was introduced as an addition to the Child Abduction Protect Act of 2003, widely recognized as the AMBER Alert bill (S151). The "RAVE" Act had not passed a single committee before being attached to the AMBER Alert bill. In addition, it was so controversial when it was introduced during the 107th Congress that two Senators withdrew their sponsorship.

The "RAVE" Act makes it easier for the federal government to prosecute innocent business owners for the drug offenses of their customers - even if they take steps to stop such activity. This is a threat to free speech and musical expression while placing at risk any hotel/motel owner, concert promoter, event organizer, nightclub owner or arena/stadium owner for the drug violations of third parties - real or alleged - regardless of whether or not the promoter and/or property owner made a good-faith effort to keep their event drug-free. It applies not only to electronic music parties, but any type of public gathering: theatrical productions, rock concerts, DJ nights at your local club or tavern, and political rallies. Moreover, it gives heightened powers and discretion to prosecutors who may use it to target events they personally don’t like, such as Hip-Hop events and gay and lesbian fundraisers.

The "RAVE" Act was passed despite the fact it did not have a public hearing, debate or vote in Congress. It is important to note that because of overwhelming opposition to the "RAVE" Act, legislators were forced to remove some of the most egregious language before it passed.

For example, the word "rave" was removed from the version of the bill attached to the AMBER Alert. Eliminating such blatant discrimination is a victory for our continued freedom of speech. Also, the original bill suggested that prosecutors should view the sale of water and the presence of glowsticks or massage oil as evidence of drug use. These ludicrous "findings" were completely removed due in large part to activists who sent nearly 30,000 faxes in 2003 alone to their Senators urging them not to support the dangerous legislation.

When it was first introduced there was widespread belief that the "RAVE" Act would move through the legislative channels quickly with no revision. Instead, it took 10 months, a change of power in the United States Senate, backroom policymaking, and substantial changes to the bill before it was passed - and even then it did not pass via "normal" legislative procedures.
The "RAVE" Act gives the government even more power to harass and arrest innocent musicians, promoters, venue owners, and fans - all in the name of the War on Drugs.

Law enforcement agencies already target certain types of musical and cultural events and the nightclubs that host them. The Drug Enforcement Administration is prosecuting nightclub owners and promoters that organize electronic dance music events and the military is using drugs as a pretext to close down gay nightclubs. In Michigan in March 2005, a nightclub was raided with some attendees reportedly being strip-searched and over 100 people being ticketed and slapped with a misdemeanor charge, just for being in proximity to people using drugs.

A similar incident happened in 2002 in Wisconsin. In addition, drug laws are often enforced unevenly against African Americans and Latinos. Hip-Hop could easily become a target.
Opposition to the "RAVE" Act remains strong - over 3,000 of you spoke out after the arrests in Michigan. In July 2005 the Alliance submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to the Department of Justice for information on how the RAVE Act is being used, in order to determine whether it is being abused by prosecutors. The Drug Policy Alliance and its coalition of partners will continue to work to protect property owners, prevent further criminalization of dance and music events, mobilize opposition, and advocate amending this dangerous law.

On Apr 16, 2003 the House and Senate almost unanimously passed the National AMBER Alert Network Act of 2003, a popular bill that will soon create a nationwide kidnapping alert system. Coming in the wake of a year of high-profile child abductions -- from Elizabeth Smart (whose parents supported the bill) to Samantha Runnion -- the bill was a no-brainer, destined to pass quickly and smoothly through Congress.

Surely Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.) knew this, which explains why he cannily sneaked his own, completely unrelated legislation into the AMBER Act just two days before the vote. Piggybacked onto the act was the Illicit Drug Anti-Proliferation Act, a thinly veiled rewrite of legislation that was controversial in 2002 and failed to make it to a vote on the Senate floor. Now, club owners and partyers alike are being subjected to a loosely worded and heavy-handed law that authorities will be able to indiscriminately use to shut down music events at any time they please, assuming they find evidence of drug use. Thanks to Biden's surreptitious efforts, a few glow sticks and a customer or two on Ecstasy could be all it takes to throw a party promoter in jail for 20 years.

The passing of the Illicit Drug Anti-Proliferation Act was sudden but not entirely out of the blue. Last year, the Illicit Drug Anti-Proliferation Act was known as the RAVE Act (the leadenly acronymed "Reducing Americans' Vulnerability to Ecstasy Act"), a piece of legislation designed by Biden in early 2002 to put rave promoters out of business. An expansion of the crack-house statute of 1986 -- which made crack-den proprietors liable for what took place in their homes, even if they didn't deal drugs themselves -- the RAVE Act threatened those who "knowingly and intentionally rent, lease, profit from, or make available for use, with or without compensation, [a] place for the purpose of unlawfully manufacturing, storing, distributing, or using a controlled substance" with 20 years in jail and $250,000 in fines.

In English, this meant that anyone who intentionally let people do drugs at their events could be held liable. It also expanded the crack-house statute in two significant ways: Now the law could be applied to one-night events -- concerts, raves, parties, festivals -- as well as permanent locales like nightclubs, and it added civil penalties for violations, lowering the burden of proof from "beyond reasonable doubt" to a "preponderance of evidence."

So what "preponderance of evidence" would authorities use to determine that the people who threw these parties "knowingly" let their customers and guests use drugs? The RAVE Act offered a handy list of "findings" that authorities could use as proof -- including the presence of "overpriced bottles of water" and chill rooms, and the sale of glow sticks, massage oils and pacifiers (all of which are sometimes used to enhance the effects of Ecstasy). Never mind that all of the above can also be found at everything from 'N Sync concerts to an Earth Day festival; in the eyes of Biden and other like-minded officials and law enforcement officers (of which there are many), these are sinister drug paraphernalia that can only point to one thing.

Civil liberties groups and grass-roots activists from the electronic music community went on the defense. Infuriated ravers flooded Congress with letters, complaining that they were being singled out because of their lifestyle choices. The ACLU and the reform-minded Drug Policy Alliance convinced co-sponsoring Sens. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and Dick Durbin, D-Ill., that the vaguely written law could be used to limit freedom of expression and that businesses would unconstitutionally be held liable for their customers' actions. The two senators withdrew their support, and the RAVE Act finally died in committee last fall.

But Biden was not deterred, and he reintroduced the bill in early 2003. This time, in order to nominally appease detractors, he changed the name of his bill to the less inflammatory "Illicit Drug Anti-Proliferation Act" and struck the "findings" section of the legislation. Then he swiftly tacked it on to the AMBER Act, where, without any kind of hearing and before the ACLU and grass-roots organizations could raise a stink, it finally passed.

The bill's opponents worry that the new law (which will probably be signed by President Bush in the next few weeks) will effectively quash the electronic music community. Most ravers don't object to the targeting of unprincipled rave promoters who do sell drugs to kids, but the law is so loosely worded that it could be used against anyone who throws parties that are unpopular with local authorities. After all, according to the new law, you don't actually need to be directly involved in providing drugs to customers to be found guilty; all you have to do is knowingly allow drug use to take place.

The police are no doubt delighted to have a new weapon to use in their skirmishes with clubs and late-night revelers (a feud that goes all the way back to the days of Prohibition). Do the local authorities have issues with your nightclub or party? All they would need to do is find a few drug users at your event and "prove" that you endorsed this activity by pointing at, say, your overpriced bottled water or the ambulances that you keep on standby in case of emergencies (a common practice at concerts and nightclubs alike), and they could shut you down, throw you in jail, and empty your bank account.

Biden argues that this will never happen. "The purpose of my legislation is not to prosecute legitimate law-abiding managers of stadiums, arenas, performing arts centers, licensed beverage facilities and other venues because of incidental drug use at their events," he wrote when he introduced the Illicit Drug Anti-Proliferation Act. "My bill would help in the prosecution of rogue promoters who not only know that there is drug use at their event but also hold the event for the purpose of illegal drug use or distribution."

Unfortunately, precedents show otherwise. Biden's bill -- even with the findings removed -- formalizes what has been taking place in drug-enforcement circles for several years: Since 2000, authorities around the country have moved to shut down some of the nation's most popular dance parties, using the crack-house statue as a bludgeon and those glow sticks and chill rooms as their evidence. In many cities, such as San Diego and Fort Lauderdale, the police have even formed "Rave Task Forces" -- and study DEA-provided fact sheets that detail drug paraphernalia (sports drinks! lollipops! eye drops!) -- to shut down electronic music events and jail their promoters.

In New Orleans, for example, the promoters of one of the city's most popular dance clubs, Freebass, were charged with allowing drug use to take place at their events, despite an utter lack of evidence that they were in any way involved with or aware of drug sales. The promoters plea-bargained to avoid a costly lawsuit and ended up signing an injunction that forbade the presence of glow sticks, pacifiers, massage tables and chill rooms at any future parties (as if these were somehow to blame for the drug problem). And the Department of Alcohol and Beverage Control last week moved to shut down Ten 15 Folsom, one of the largest and most popular nightclubs in San Francisco, and accused the owners of permitting drug use to take place there. Once again, investigators pointed at the presence of glow sticks, as well as emergency medical technicians (which, ironically, Ten 15 had begun providing, by court order, after several overdoses by customers) as evidence that the club owners endorsed drug use.

The backward logic of this thinking punishes club owners and rave promoters for trying to keep their customers safe. It is inevitable that some revelers at just about any kind of musical event -- whether an Avril Lavigne concert or a techno dance club -- are going to bring and consume drugs, no matter how diligently you search their pockets or how often you eject offenders. Club owners and party promoters are aware of this (who isn't?) and often do everything they can to both limit this activity and prevent tragedies among those who pop pills anyway. It's quite possible that the Illicit Drug Anti-Proliferation Act will force panicky promoters to reconsider providing ambulances or EMTs, lest those be used as "evidence" against them. Already, many parties have stopped harm-reduction groups like DanceSafe from coming to their events to pass out safety literature or anonymously test Ecstasy pills to ensure that they aren't more lethal concoctions.

Once the president signs the bill, promoters may consider the risks and never throw parties at all. Others will simply move their parties underground to illegal locations (abandoned warehouses, empty buildings, remote fields) where they are less likely to be found by authorities but more likely to be providing an unsafe setting for their customers.

The law isn't limited to electronic music events, either. Civil liberties experts worry that it could be used as a tool of bigotry to shut down hip-hop or gay-circuit parties. In a worst-case scenario, the DEA could even bust you for a private barbecue in your home where friends light up a bong: After all, the new law covers private residences, too. That may be unlikely, but the DEA is no stranger to badly conceived drug raids.

No one is arguing that drug use doesn't take place at raves and nightclubs and concerts, that kids don't sometimes use glow sticks or pacifiers to enhance their high, or that drugs aren't harmful -- occasionally lethal -- for kids. But in its rush to stamp out America's current drug demon, Ecstasy, this sweeping and illogical legislation instead violates basic civil liberties and labels entire communities as the enemy.

All these concerns may very well have come out during public debate on the law -- but, of course, that never happened. Immediately after the AMBER Alert was passed, Sen. Leahy issued a press release complaining about the unrelated legislation that was piggybacked on the bill, singling out the Illicit Drug Anti-Proliferation Act as one of the worst offenders. "Business owners have come to Congress and told us there are only so many steps they can take to prevent any of the thousands of people who may attend a concert or a rave from using drugs, and they are worried about being held personally accountable for the illegal acts of others," he wrote. "Those concerns may well be overstated, but they deserve a fuller hearing ... I think we would have been well-served by making a greater effort to find out."

Too late. Instead, yet another badly conceived piece of drug legislation, capriciously taking aim at the enemy du jour, was rammed through the system before more rational voices could discuss it. The vote took a matter of minutes and no thought whatsoever; the repercussions of the law will be felt for years.

Hey everyone, I hope your summer has been treating you well! We have been dying to update you with all that has been going on but it has been tough and we are sorry for taking so long. So let me just say that this is going to be long and FILLED with goodies so get comfortable and read on. This is Pull here and I have been nominated to do the typing so just know from this point on it is coming from us all, even if I mistake the occasional "I" for "WE". So we are back in NY and have a full report on our release parties, I am going to work backwards and begin with HOLLYWOOD since it is freshest in our minds. I guess first we want to thank everyone who came out and all those who helped. Putting these things together is a bitch and a half and would have been impossible to do without the help of a few key people.

So we want to thank: Dave Navarro for playing with us and making LA so special, Sarah from Evil Threads for her countless hours and being there at any moment we needed something, from bands to play with to acoustic guitars at 2 AM. Dave's manager Larissa who also spent so much of her time helping us organize schedules as well as any thing else we needed. Mike D. at the viper room for really going out of his way to make the night special as well as everyone else at the viper for being just so damn cool to us. Marcus from VHT who saved my ass since my amp didn't make it. Metal Sanaz for hosting our night, The bands that played the night with us, 33Degree, Plastik and Her Skeleton who all worked to promote the night, our agent Steve and of course Aldo from our label. I find this necessary to say since it takes a bunch of people to make these things happen and too often people are not thanked publicly for what they do privately.

Hollywood at the Viper Room was Amazing! Everyone we hoped would come did, so many different types of people from Industry to friends, Adult stars to Rock Stars, Suicide girls etc etc etc. Raiana and I got there a few days early as Joe and Will were delayed with our gear (that sucked) so Raiana and I handled what we could alone. 1 of which was an interview on "Forbidden Radio".

met great people like Lux and Justin. The rest of our time before the guys got there was spent solving problems and organizing last minute details for the show. My trip kinda started off rough, when we first went to check in the hotel clerk mangled my bank card and left me stranded with no card and no money with the nearest bank too far to walk to and too late in the day to get to so between that and my favorite place to eat no longer being there I was a bit bummed. Luckily the next morning I was able to get it taken care of but I would not recommend that to anyone.

As we were gearing up for the show Dave's schedule was so hectic and we were trying to figure out if we would have time to throw a rehearsal together, it was getting rough so Dave and I just had a quick phone call to go over some parts. Now this was one of those things that anyone else hearing would have been like WTF is going on. There we are on the phone going......so is it chung...ch..chu...chu...chung or flaaang fla flaaa fla flaaaang? It was perfect and we settled most of it in a 5 minute chat on the phone. We also decided to get to sound check a bit early and tighten things up. Now on the day of the show I once again realized how different certain people's everyday life can be, I mean.....you know it in your head but when you see it, it just hits harder. We all made a plan to be there at a certain time right, so we see Dave pass us while we are in front of our hotel, he beeps & smiles as he drives by, I then drive to the club, park in front no big deal, just getting ready to put our gear inside etc. Dave pulls up behind me and quickly rushes in, in my head I'm like...hmmm that was weird, just the look on his face ya know....then I hear maaaaad footsteps hauling ass down the street and it's the paparazzi trying to get shots of Dave, I couldn't believe how fast they came out of fucking nowhere, I was so caught off guard I almost decked them. The only time I hear footsteps charging like that means someone is getting their ass kicked. I was like seriously guys, are you kidding.....It's 5 PM Friday and Dave Navarro is going into the viper room......oooooooh big fucking story, He lives there, he is a musician what's the big story leave the guy alone. I found out that they were chasing him for like 20 minutes just making his life miserable. I don't know, I know so many people are like...your famous stop complaining but out there, it is just way out of control. Sure Dave is a pro and knows how to handle it but I felt bad and wanted to just wreck those guys out of principle.

Ok I digress, so to speed things up I will try and just get fact oriented. We get on stage to rehearse and I must say, being we never played together and were all seeing each other for the first time in a while, It went awesome right off the bat. Dave and I locked in a few details then we played the song 2 x and everyone felt good. Hearing Dave just break out into that solo the first time was so bad ass though, and each time it had something different, that is the best feeling, to play and not know what's coming next, but to play with someone that each time takes it to another level....few of us are lucky to ever be around that.

So now was gonna be the risky part, we play a remixed version of "Whole Lotta Love" in a different key etc and we wanted Dave to play it with us. So I spring it on him in sound check, I could see he was hesitant, rightfully so, I mean the guy has played that song verbatim for god knows how long and now we want him to basically just wing our version. So I ask him to listen to us do it once and then decide....by the second chorus he was on stage wailing....it was off the hook as the kids now say. So I explained the arrangement one more time and we ran it together and he was like yup...let's do it. we were stoked! From this point on the night starts to blur so without further adieu, here are some video clips and pictures of our west coast release party at the viper room. I wish there was better sound but hey, something is better then nothing. Once again we wanted to thank Dave for taking out the time to come play with us, we know it was a lot for him to do and we are truly grateful as it was a career highlight.

Electro pop weirdos Hot Chip will be touring North America this fall.

Coming off the success of their recent album, Made in the Dark, the group will hit a number of cities throughout the continent in the effort to bring their hip musical offerings to a wider audience. The group's live show is notable for getting even arms-crossed American indie audiences swaying a bit more than normal, so expect the possibility of a full-fledged dance party breaking out at select shows.

If the group's last jaunt through North America is any indication, there will also be a few afterparties where they'll showcase the eclectic music taste heard on the group's DJ Kicks full-length. Keep an eye out for local announcements in your area.

Ricardo Villalobos plays Iraq

Minimal star Ricardo Villalobos was spinning a party for US troops in the Green Zonein late April.

The booking was a shock to Villalobos watchers as the German DJ is well known for his anti-US stance. For several years, he has boycotted playing in the United States as a form of protest against the Bush administration.

“I haven’t had a change of heart,” Villalobos told RA. "I've still got a beef with Bush and Cheney personally. But I realize now I shouldn’t hold average people responsible for their government’s foreign policy. The soldiers over there are just doing their job. And after all, at the afterhours we’re all on the same side anyway.”

The party was organized by First Lieutenant April Cohn, a former techno promoter from New York, who explains she had been trying to convince Villalobos to play in America for many years. “When our unit goes out on patrol, I like to pipe Fabric 36 through everyone’s intercom helmets,” chuckles Cohn. “I’ve even managed to turn on some of the hip-hop guys to Ricardo’s sound.”

Dubbed ‘Dance for Iraq’, the set took place in one of Saddam’s disused ballrooms in the Green Zone on April 31st. Support for the gig comes from enlisted soldiers Private Clement Rivers and Staff Sergeant James T. Nelson, both DJs from the Detroit area.

Villalobos follows in the footsteps of other celebrities such as Toby Keith and Papa Roach, who have entertained US troops in Iraq.

Sasha gets involved again

Superstar DJ Sasha will return to Global Underground in September for the second edition of his Involver mix series.

Dubbed Invol2ver, the CD features twelve heavily worked over tracks that have been blended together by the celebrated DJ. Featured are Radiohead's Thom Yorke, synth pop stars Ladytron, indie troubadour Ray La Montagne and Telefon Tel Aviv. Limited edition copies will include a second CD of Sasha remix exclusives.

Like the original Involver, the heavily edited tracks have been reworked by Sasha himself, allowing the producer to build the mix much like a novel, complete with foreshadowing, rising action, climax and denouement. With the varied likes of M83, Rone and Home Video also on board, we expect it to be a highly melodic journey that throws an anthemic bomb in the face of the reigning minimal techno sound.

In support of the release, Sasha will play a special extended set at Ministry of Sound on August 30th. Full information and tickets on RA below.

Dinky says it may be later

Recent RA podcaster Dinky will release her third album in October. Entitled May Be Later, the full-length will be her first for the Vakant label.

As a friend of both Ricardo Villalobos and Richie Hawtin, Dinky must've had some serious feedback for this effort, which promises to marry "beauty and brawn" on a record that "bridges sound and mood from the summery and sublime to the dark and throbbing." Or so say the press notes. We'll reserve judgment until we get our grubby, little hands on the record. But judging by her recent EP for Vakant, Move In, you can expect a slightly lighter take on the tribal minimal sound that the label has pioneered over the last few years, along with a guest spot from recent Villalobos collaborator Jorge González.

Daft Punk prepare a new album

The ex manager from Daft Punk, Busy P, revealed in a recent interview for the Australian webzine Inthemix, that Daft Punk are back in the studio and they prepare a new material int he forthcoming months.

“The boys are in a studio in Paris at the moment,” Ed Banger boss revealed to ITM. “And I can’t wait to listen to their new stuff! The good thing is that they are making music at the moment.” While those creative juices are flowing again, it’s not known at this stage when the new album might see the light of day. “They are slow, you know,” Busy P laughed when asked. “They are taking their time, and they have a right.”
